So, How Does It Feel?

7 Sep

This is a 10-part Triple Rhyme Poem that talks about karma. According to Dictionary.com, karma is “the principle of retributive justice determining a person’s state of life and the state of his reincarnations as the effect of her/his past deeds.”

You do reap what you sow. Good and bad. I’ve been blessed with good fortune at unexpected and oftentimes moments when I was on the brink of despair. I’ve also done my share of dirt and have been on the receiving end of this boomerang myself and let me tell you, it was not a pleasant experience.

Song, book, and movie titles are hyper-linked to their respective audio, summary, or video pages on GrooveShark.com, Amazon.com, IMDB.com, or YouTube.com.

I want you to have a full multimedia experience during your visit here on my blog.

After you pulled your mess I thought about you on Two Occasions; day and night.

Mama Said Knock You Out and I’m mentally and physically built for war and ready to fight.

It is most definitely time for the Payback because what you did was wrong and it is going to be made right.

Don Corleone from The Godfather said, “Revenge is a dish best served cold.”

My initial impulse was to go Boogie Down and make you Ante Up truth be told.

Justice is sweeter than revenge and platinum is more valuable than gold.

I stepped away from vengeful thinking because I have a different Method, Man.

Work hard, be fair in your dealings, and be open to learning new things should always be part of your daily plan.

Sometimes bad things happen to good people and sometimes folks fly off the handle – just ask Eminem about that dude Stan.

Exhale the anger because it consumes you and keeps you from thinking straight.

Like Colin Powell said, “Get mad, get over it, then get going” is What Makes the Great Great.

Rage makes you less than the divine being you could be so make a choice not to hate.

Sometimes there will be anxiety but when you Get Up Stand Up for what’s right be Not Afraid.

The Force, Great Spirit, Mother Nature, or whatever you want to call it makes sure that no debts go unpaid.

Righteousness is a solid rock and lies and hypocrisy dry-up and fade.

Who Do You Love and Could You Be Loved and will you do what is the right thing to do?

It is so much easier to tell the truth because when one gets caught in their lies it is sickening like having a bad case of the Spanish Flu.

It begins to feel like your insides are on fire and beginning to stew.

It didn’t have to be this way but you wanted to be a bully even though you already had the high-ground.

You constantly needed your ego stroked and needed reassurances that you were the alpha and the king of the mound.

Now my Cosmic Mama will teach you a lesson that will break you down to the very last compound.

You thought me too injured and distraught to fight back against your attacks.

You may have even thought me to be dead and stinking but the heat you brought reshaped me like molded wax.

An indomitable soul is like Bébé’s Kids because it doesn’t die, it multiplies and those are the facts.

Now look at yourself being in a world of hurt and nowhere to run and hide.

I actually pity you because now your falling because you had a cocky pride.

Standing there with your mouth and eyes opened wide.

I bet you can’t really Breathe because you’re shocked and things seem so surreal.

Karma goes 360 degrees and What Goes Around comes back around full circle like reel to reel.

Labor Day Reflections

2 Sep

Labor Day is more than about sparking up the grill or being the last holiday before kids go back to school. Unions and other progressives fought to make our workplaces safe and that workers be treated with respect. However, there is still much work to be done.barbecing-bbqing-bbq-54925452499_xlarge

I say that the nation needs the Model Employment Termination Act (META). So far, out of 50 states in our union, only Montana has a version of this law –> http://bit.ly/17uLNz9. Of course, big company’s tend to fight against any legislation like this via their “donations with strings attached.” As progressives before us have don, we can make a change.

Companies are quick to remind its employees that under the “At Will” employment doctrine that they can terminate your employent at any time or for any reason. As a matter of fact, they don’t even need a reason. META requires that an employer shows just cause for terminating an employee’s employment.

We all have to usher in a new Progressive Era; like our country had in the early 20th century. We cannot as a nation condemn ourselves and our children to a future without these reforms. Also, terminations without cause create “big government” in that people are forced onto unemployment and perhaps welfare programs (e.g., AFDC and food stamps) and can cause homelessness. The adoption of META-like legislation can help take the strain off of the government. I am not an economist, but it seems to be a matter of cause and effect.

Now that you have food for thought, go enjoy your burgers and hot dogs.

It’s all about F.A.M.I.L.Y.

This is an excerpt from my upcoming book, The 52 Corporate Caveats.

It will be a digital download and will be released this coming fall.

This book is an outgrowth of a poem I wrote and posted on this blog entitled “Love Your Enemies”.

____________________________

Okay, I talked about how things can suck so it is only fair that I offer a solution. You know, it always killed me on some folks criticize things but never offer alternatives. I remember when I was at a seminar a few years back and the author of The Slight Edge, Jeff Olson, said, “Have you noticed that there are no statues erected in the honor of critics?” That is so true! I committed at that moment to not criticize anything unless I was willing to work on finding a better way.

So, what with this proposed workplace code I’m not talking about bringing the kids and your spouse to work. I’m talking about a new doctrine that could be used in the workplace that could yield better results; more revenue, more happiness and more hope for advancement. F.A.M.I.L.Y. is an acronym. I would be remiss if I did not admit that this was inspired by my experience working in the direct selling industry where cooperation is encouraged over competition. A good leader should work to encourage these things in her little fiefdom in order to create the “perfect workplace.” Now, people are not perfect, but if we adopt this as our code we will get better.

Here is what F.A.M.I.L.Y. is all about:

Fairness

Everyone is to be treated with appreciation and respect, and any progress or special dates (e.g. birthdays, anniversaries with the company, promotions, etc.) should be celebrated. Your skin color, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, religion, political views, handicaps, health nor any other legally protected class should be a factor. Whether you average-looking, ugly, drop-dead gorgeous matters not. It is all about giving everyone equal access to opportunities and to due process.

Accountability

Everyone is to be held accountable for their actions and/or the lack thereof. No more “throwing others under the bus” to save one’s own hide. How can you have true success at work when everyone is suspicious of each other? Let’s all be adults and like President Harry Truman used to say, “The buck stops here.” That is the mindset that needs to be instilled in today’s workers.

Merit-based Promotions

Ideally, promotions will be based on merit. Let’ start picking the right man for the job. By the way, oftentimes, the right man for the job is a woman. Organizations can’t achieve greatness with “hooking-up” their cronies. Put the right people in right positions and beautiful things can happen.

Intrapreneurship

The best ideas come from the field. I heard that Post-It® Notes was created by a 3M employee. Companies should start paying attention that their employees have a wealth of ideas. As a matter of fact, companies oftentimes steal employee-generated ideas and claim them as their own intellectual property as per the employee handbook. Dang. At least give the employees some sort of incentives and recognition. Well, they don’t know about the F.A.M.I.L.Y. code yet so maybe they’ll do better once we school them. Nurture employees and encourage them to come up with new ways to do things or to submit product ideas. Have them take entrepreneurial-like initiatives while working for the company.
Intrapreneurship is the new cool.

Leadership

I believe that leaders are made, not born. Skills can be taught. If you want your employees to be better, Corporate America has to do better with giving them educational opportunities. This can be classroom instruction, tuition reimbursement, mentorship or cross-training. Also, leaders need to understand that you must be a servant to your employees first. Being the boss doesn’t mean that you have to be a “double S.O.B.” spelled backwards!

Yeoman Work Ethic

Projects should be handled with enthusiasm and a sense of urgency from beginning to end. Revenue is lost because of lethargic work habits. Work hard so you can play hard. Like the great rapper, Big Daddy Kane said in his song, RAW, “I worked like a slave so I can become a master.” Ideally, this is how one gets promoted.

All six parts of F.A.M.I.L.Y. are interdependent on each other. You have to have all of them firing on all cylinders to create the perfect workplace. Will there ever be the perfect workplace? No. Nonetheless, it is an ideal to strive for because most current options stink.
