For His Purple Highness, Prince

21 Apr

Rest in peace, Prince. You are by far my favorite artist. I will miss your awesome live shows. I’ve never felt so sad about the loss of an artist. He was so much more than that to me. His music is the soundtrack of my life. This poem is dedicated to you. #salute #prince #whendovescry

*Song titles are capitalized.

Today, those in the spirit realm are going to PARTY LIKE IT’S 1999 and cause a HOUSEQUAKE.

Confetti is going to fall like PURPLE RAIN and people gonna do like Beyonce says and get in formation while wearing a RASPBERRY BERET and PINK CASHMERE.

Yeah he caused a lot of CONTROVERSY, but all of his fans would say that they did indeed ADORE him.prince

He would tell us to let others know that we love them and to give them 1,000 HUGS AND KISSES.

The best things in life are free and they don’t have to be DIAMONDS AND PEARLS.

Listen closely; WHEN DOVES CRY they are saying, “I WOULD DIE 4 U.”

Live your life and ROCK HARD IN A FUNKY PLACE and eat and drink what you like even if it is STARFISH AND COFFEE.

Avoid getting caught up in the POP LIFE, because all this craziness in the world is a SIGN O’ THE TIMES.

He made a right on ALPHABET STREET and has rode off into the horizon in a LITTLE RED CORVETTE being chauffeured DARLING NICKKI who cleaned up her act and is now a LADY CAB DRIVER.

He told us about THIEVES IN TEMPLE who try to rob us UNDER THE CHERRY MOON.

The Grim Reaper gave him a KISS that has made his body cold. He was the CREAM and he rose to the top.

He is a PARTYMAN, so I am sure his soul is doing the BATDANCE in the great beyond.

Thank you for being the prolific artist and true humanitarian you were.

NOTHING COMPARES TO YOU.

No Justice! No Peace! Please…Give It a Rest!

There have been some very disappointing events for African-American people here in the USA as of late. They Zimmerman Trial and the Dunn Trial are two such events. Also, what about the disappointing delay for the Central Park 5 getting compensation for their wrongful imprisonment?

Well, I am not one to protest and such. I’d rather boycott those who disrespect and dehumanize black people.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott is a great example of how to conduct yourselves when someone disrespect you.

A lot of us have gone soft with the advent of social media.

Special shout-out to Tariq Nasheed and Tommy Sotomayor for spitting the truth to power and the people on these matters.

To be clear, it is all about replacing the current system of White Supremacy with a system of justice for ALL. Not replacing it with “Black Supremacy” or any other supremacy for that matter.

Check out the sonnet below I wrote expressing my feeling on this.

no justice no peaceBlack people marching will NOT get it done.

Neither will long Facebook or Twitter rants.

These tactics are very easy for folks to shun.

Let’s rethink strategy and make a stance.

Boycotts work better; no respect, no loot.

Stop the public statements of forgiveness.

It is not intelligent; gets the boot!

We should expect more, not settle for less.

Neely Fuller, Frances Cress-Welsing; GIANTS!

They teach us how to understand our plight.

Marimba Ani explains their mindset.

White Supremacy needs OUR compliance.

We have plans that work. Get ready, get set…

Claud Anderson, Amos Wilson; our best.

“No Justice! No peace!” Please…give it a rest!

Mission Accomplie!

4 Jan

This 8-part Triple Rhyme Poem was inspired by George Lucas’s blockbuster film, Star Wars.

Read between the lines and perhaps you can relate this to a situation your life or one that you may be aware of.

Gold Leader, this is Dragon Slayer, do you copy? Over.

Victory is sweet like a box of candies from Russell Stover,

And more cherished than my loyal Labrador Retriever named Rover.

I ran my sortie as commanded and I hit the bullseye.

When I saw my missiles hit the target I let out a deep sigh.

I was overtaken with joy and I began to cry.

So long has this evil empire oppressed us and killed our heroes.

We sat and watched in terror while our allies fell one by one like dominoes.

Now it is time for The Big Payback because that how Karma goes.

Burn Baby Burn like a Disco Inferno for your blood lust.

No one is going to miss your tyrannical reign so ashes to ashes and dust to dust.

Your villainy broke the covenant you had with your subjects which is a sacred trust.

Working together while feeling the fear and doing it anyway we toppled this savage beast.

They deserve the worst of everything but they will have to Ante Up now at least.

They were looking westward but our squadron swooped in on them from the east.

You let me have the honor of taking the kill shot and I am grateful.

The things this despotic regime did to me and my family was so hateful.

Revenge is a dish best served cold so I served up a plateful.

Gold Leader, we lost a lot of pilots and ships on this run but it was not for naught.

I’m proud of my brothers and sisters-in-arms because to the very last they fought.

They understood that freedom isn’t free and blood, sweat and tears is the currency in which in must be bought.

Our determination made it happen because there is no “I” in the word “We.”

Pardon my French but I blew them to f*cking bits! Use your long range scanners to see.

Oh damn. Going back to my French I’ll just say, “Mission accomplie!”

Here Be Dragons? Well, Here Comes the Slayer!

I hope that you like this Shakespearean/English styled sonnet. It is about fighting back against bullies in the workplace. That is a topic that is very personal to me. I don’t like bullies and I don’t like folks to mess with my money. Can you dig that? Enjoy!

dred dragon slayer

Fire-breathing, ferocious and dangerous.
Evoking fear among sinners and saints.
Destroying lives of those who cause a fuss.
Making people too scared to file complaints.

The belly of the beast is where we dwell;
The foul stench and viscous slime all around.
Lamenting in the inferno of Hell.
Ignoring cries for help; we’re numb to sound.

The monster must die before we’re consumed.
A dagger to the heart; blows to the head.
With true words as your sword the fiend is doomed.
Karma craves justice and she must be fed.

Not apathetic or a naysayer
Here be dragons? Well, here comes the slayer!

The Keeper’s Prayer

4 Dec

I pray that I do not shame my ancestors or those who have sacrificed so that I may prosper.

I hope I never let good people get hurt while I stand by in silence.

May I never feign ignorance or have apathy toward the plight of others.

Help me to avoid the guilty feelings and shame that causes some to cry in private for being a coward.

On this day, I declare that all is well with my soul.

I am cloaked in the garment of truth and justice.

As real as the fear of danger may be, I forge ahead for the sake of righteousness.

I clearly understand that it could be them today, and me tomorrow.

May I be listed among those who is living a purposeful life, and that my family, friends, and co-workers respect me as such.

I am a sincere sayer of this, the Keeper’s Prayer.helping hand

Back to Life and Hard Lessons Learned

4 Oct

In the early 90’s when I was a college student, Arsenio Hall was part of my daily routine. I went to classes at St. John’s University in Jamaica (Queens, NY), went to work part-time at a prominent law firm based in Midtown Manhattan, then came home and made sure to watch The Arsenio Hall Show each night before going to sleep. His show ended rather abruptly without a clear reason as to why. Arsenio is back and after I saw the below interview with CNN’s Don Lemon, I became an even bigger fan than I was before.

"Celebrity Apprentice" Live Finale

Listen to the pearls of wisdom Arsenio shares in this interview and be inspired.

I like what he said about adversity: “You learn a lot about the people around you.”

Truer words have not been spoken.

Let me know your thoughts on this video. Thanks.

So, How Does It Feel?

7 Sep

This is a 10-part Triple Rhyme Poem that talks about karma. According to Dictionary.com, karma is “the principle of retributive justice determining a person’s state of life and the state of his reincarnations as the effect of her/his past deeds.”

You do reap what you sow. Good and bad. I’ve been blessed with good fortune at unexpected and oftentimes moments when I was on the brink of despair. I’ve also done my share of dirt and have been on the receiving end of this boomerang myself and let me tell you, it was not a pleasant experience.

Song, book, and movie titles are hyper-linked to their respective audio, summary, or video pages on GrooveShark.com, Amazon.com, IMDB.com, or YouTube.com.

karma

After you pulled your mess I thought about you on Two Occasions; day and night.

Mama Said Knock You Out and I’m mentally and physically built for war and ready to fight.

It is most definitely time for the Payback because what you did was wrong and it is going to be made right.

Don Corleone from The Godfather said, “Revenge is a dish best served cold.”

My initial impulse was to go Boogie Down and make you Ante Up truth be told.

Justice is sweeter than revenge and platinum is more valuable than gold.

I stepped away from vengeful thinking because I have a different Method, Man.

Work hard, be fair in your dealings, and be open to learning new things should always be part of your daily plan.

Sometimes bad things happen to good people and sometimes folks fly off the handle – just ask Eminem about that dude Stan.

Exhale the anger because it consumes you and keeps you from thinking straight.

Like Colin Powell said, “Get mad, get over it, then get going” is What Makes the Great Great.

Rage makes you less than the divine being you could be so make a choice not to hate.

Sometimes there will be anxiety but when you Get Up Stand Up for what’s right be Not Afraid.

The Force, Great Spirit, Mother Nature, or whatever you want to call it makes sure that no debts go unpaid.

Righteousness is a solid rock and lies and hypocrisy dry-up and fade.

Who Do You Love and Could You Be Loved and will you do what is the right thing to do?

It is so much easier to tell the truth because when one gets caught in their lies it is sickening like having a bad case of the Spanish Flu.

It begins to feel like your insides are on fire and beginning to stew.

It didn’t have to be this way but you wanted to be a bully even though you already had the high-ground.

You constantly needed your ego stroked and needed reassurances that you were the alpha and the king of the mound.

Now my Cosmic Mama will teach you a lesson that will break you down to the very last compound.

You thought me too injured and distraught to fight back against your attacks.

You may have even thought me to be dead and stinking but the heat you brought reshaped me like molded wax.

An indomitable soul is like Bébé’s Kids because it doesn’t die, it multiplies and those are the facts.

Now look at yourself being in a world of hurt and nowhere to run and hide.

I actually pity you because now your falling because you had a cocky pride.

Standing there with your mouth and eyes opened wide.

I bet you can’t really Breathe because you’re shocked and things seem so surreal.

Karma goes 360 degrees and What Goes Around comes back around full circle like reel to reel.

So, How Does It Feel?

Labor Day Reflections

2 Sep

Labor Day is more than about sparking up the grill or being the last holiday before kids go back to school. Unions and other progressives fought to make our workplaces safe and that workers be treated with respect. However, there is still much work to be done.barbecing-bbqing-bbq-54925452499_xlarge

I say that the nation needs the Model Employment Termination Act (META). So far, out of 50 states in our union, only Montana has a version of this law –> http://bit.ly/17uLNz9. Of course, big company’s tend to fight against any legislation like this via their “donations with strings attached.” As progressives before us have don, we can make a change.

Companies are quick to remind its employees that under the “At Will” employment doctrine that they can terminate your employent at any time or for any reason. As a matter of fact, they don’t even need a reason. META requires that an employer shows just cause for terminating an employee’s employment.

We all have to usher in a new Progressive Era; like our country had in the early 20th century. We cannot as a nation condemn ourselves and our children to a future without these reforms. Also, terminations without cause create “big government” in that people are forced onto unemployment and perhaps welfare programs (e.g., AFDC and food stamps) and can cause homelessness. The adoption of META-like legislation can help take the strain off of the government. I am not an economist, but it seems to be a matter of cause and effect.

Now that you have food for thought, go enjoy your burgers and hot dogs.

President Obama, leave Syria alone!

31 Aug

middle east mapI’m going to get right to the point here. I feel that the U.S.A. should not take any military action against Syria. Yes it does appear that the Syrian government may have used chemical weapons against its own people, but the U.S.A. cannot be the judge, jury and executioner for the world. Also, there is an old saying: “He who lives by the sword dies by the sword.”

It is a Civil War

Syrians are fighting Syrians so we should stay out of it. When kinfolk are fighting, it is very unwise for outsiders to intervene because both sides will turn on the outsider. This is what the Afghans did to to Soviets. The U.S.A. certainly did not want the British, the French or anyone else to side with the Confederates in the U.S. Civil War (even though their were some French advisors that helped the Union Army).

Syria is Middle East Problem

According the the New York Times, the Arab League blamed the Syrian government for using chemical weapons against its own people it does not back military action against the Syrian government. There are cultural, religious, and tribal issues in that area that Americans may never understand so it is best for the United States to stay out of it. Plus there are some of the richest countries (per capita) in the world in that region like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait so let them finance and provide the soldiers for any military campaigns. The reason they probably don’t want to put that much “skin” in the game is because they know it could cost them their hides. They are ancient cultural, religious and tribal issues in the reason so we need to stay out of it.

Blowback Against the United States

Look, things are already tense with Russia and Iran. Plus, it has been reported that Syria may have links to Hezbollah. The American homeland is already on-guard against Al Qaeda so why add yet another enemy? It is not about being afraid of terrorist organizations, but an attack against Syria would most certainly help with the recruiting efforts for extremist groups and self-radicalized individuals (like the Boston Marathon bombers). Do we really need that? I think not.

Charity Begins at Home

Before we go bombing another country then sending billions of dollars to rebuild them, how about rebuilding the infrastructure of our urban areas? How about bailing-out Detroit? How about handling beach erosion and constructing sea walls along the east coast to help people who are at risk of being flooded out again like what happened with Superstorm Sandy? The U.S. has a history of bombing countries into the stone age then rebuilding them with some sort of a Marshall Plan type of solution while citizens on the homeland suffer. That is not intelligent.

Arrogance of Democracy and Capitalism

Not every country is ripe for a democratic, republican-styled government. A nation’s history and culture has to be taken into account. The United States grew out of the United Kingdom that is based on common law. Common law is comprised of societal customs. If a society doesn’t have certain customs in its culture, you can impose common law on them and expect it to work perfectly. Also, it is extremely arrogant to think that our style of government is the best in the world. It works for us because it is part of the natural evolution of our society but will not and should not be expected to work for other societies with very different customs and histories.

Perhaps some countries are better with a monarchy, an aristocracy, or a dictator. Perhaps some should be governed by a religious leader. It depends on their history and we should respect that and stop trying to assimilate everyone into living like us. What are we? The Borg from Star Trek or something?Assimilation-by-the-Borg-in-Star-TrekI’m kind of paraphrasing Muhammad Ali on this thoughts about fighting in Vietnam, but I have to say it: No Syrian has called me the ‘N Word’ nor has any Syrian attacked me or any of my loved ones. That is to say they are NOT a threat to the U.S. homeland so leave them alone. Let the Arab league and regional powers like Turkey figure sort this out.

Assad is the Devil We Know

If U.S. military intervention helps topple the Assad regime, who is going to the new leaders? It could be another dictator or a religious zealot. As far as I know, the U.S. don’t know the players therefore we should not get involved. We could be jumping out of the frying pan right into the fire.

Yankees, we need to stay home.

That’s all I have to say on this matter.

Always In Our Hearts

26 Aug

This 5-part triple rhyme poem is about death. Remember, when you do good works you never truly die. You will live on in the hearts of your loved ones, admirers, and your tangible works (books, poems, art, etc.). This poem is appropriate to be read at funerals. As is my custom, audio files to songs on GrooveShark.com linked where song titles appear.

The day you were born changed the course of history.
Now you have left us and you’re on that path shrouded in mystery.
Beloved, We Are Family and One Blood and you’re Another Part of Me.

We will always remember your smile and the melody of your laugh.
The way you taught us to hold up our heads even after we made a gaffe
and that life isn’t always predictable and at times things don’t add up like math.

A giant among ants and a bright Shining Star in the dark night sky.
This is more like a see you later because as believers, we know to Never Say Goodbye.
Your Love Will Always Be There and memories of you will never die.

We will share stories about you with the children and celebrate your life as you would want us to do.
You wouldn’t want us to be sad and stop living life to the fullest by crying all the time because Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue.
Like the P. Diddy and Faith sang about Biggie, I’ll Be Missing You.

Death is not about endings but rather it is about new starts.
Fallen but never forgotten as from among the world of the living your body departs.
We will remember and honor you because you’re with us in our memories and always in our hearts.
