Friends, Here’s to You

23 Apr

I heard a Maya Angelou quote a couple of years ago that is so very true:

“People may forget what you said or did, but they never forget how you made them feel.”

As I travel through life and have been fortunate enough to achieve some success in few of my endeavors, I am surprised by how some that I thank respond.

They were just doing what they do as they are good people, but they had NO IDEA how much their kind words, actions, or just the road map that they provided me with from just observing them, had a positive effect on me.

Remember, people are watching and listening, and though they may forget details of what was said or done, they remember how you made them feel great. I remember those who have helped me – especially over the last 18 months, and I am thankful.

In the words of my friends from the legendary R&B group, Skyy, “Here’s to You,” my true friends.

Peace and good fortune to you all.

So, How Does It Feel?

7 Sep

This is a 10-part Triple Rhyme Poem that talks about karma. According to Dictionary.com, karma is “the principle of retributive justice determining a person’s state of life and the state of his reincarnations as the effect of her/his past deeds.”

You do reap what you sow. Good and bad. I’ve been blessed with good fortune at unexpected and oftentimes moments when I was on the brink of despair. I’ve also done my share of dirt and have been on the receiving end of this boomerang myself and let me tell you, it was not a pleasant experience.

Song, book, and movie titles are hyper-linked to their respective audio, summary, or video pages on GrooveShark.com, Amazon.com, IMDB.com, or YouTube.com.

I want you to have a full multimedia experience during your visit here on my blog.

After you pulled your mess I thought about you on Two Occasions; day and night.

Mama Said Knock You Out and I’m mentally and physically built for war and ready to fight.

It is most definitely time for the Payback because what you did was wrong and it is going to be made right.

Don Corleone from The Godfather said, “Revenge is a dish best served cold.”

My initial impulse was to go Boogie Down and make you Ante Up truth be told.

Justice is sweeter than revenge and platinum is more valuable than gold.

I stepped away from vengeful thinking because I have a different Method, Man.

Work hard, be fair in your dealings, and be open to learning new things should always be part of your daily plan.

Sometimes bad things happen to good people and sometimes folks fly off the handle – just ask Eminem about that dude Stan.

Exhale the anger because it consumes you and keeps you from thinking straight.

Like Colin Powell said, “Get mad, get over it, then get going” is What Makes the Great Great.

Rage makes you less than the divine being you could be so make a choice not to hate.

Sometimes there will be anxiety but when you Get Up Stand Up for what’s right be Not Afraid.

The Force, Great Spirit, Mother Nature, or whatever you want to call it makes sure that no debts go unpaid.

Righteousness is a solid rock and lies and hypocrisy dry-up and fade.

Who Do You Love and Could You Be Loved and will you do what is the right thing to do?

It is so much easier to tell the truth because when one gets caught in their lies it is sickening like having a bad case of the Spanish Flu.

It begins to feel like your insides are on fire and beginning to stew.

It didn’t have to be this way but you wanted to be a bully even though you already had the high-ground.

You constantly needed your ego stroked and needed reassurances that you were the alpha and the king of the mound.

Now my Cosmic Mama will teach you a lesson that will break you down to the very last compound.

You thought me too injured and distraught to fight back against your attacks.

You may have even thought me to be dead and stinking but the heat you brought reshaped me like molded wax.

An indomitable soul is like Bébé’s Kids because it doesn’t die, it multiplies and those are the facts.

Now look at yourself being in a world of hurt and nowhere to run and hide.

I actually pity you because now your falling because you had a cocky pride.

Standing there with your mouth and eyes opened wide.

I bet you can’t really Breathe because you’re shocked and things seem so surreal.

Karma goes 360 degrees and What Goes Around comes back around full circle like reel to reel.

So, How Does It Feel?

Love Your Enemies

love your enemies

This was inspired by one of my favorite authors, Robert Greene. This is a 34-part haiku chain poem. Some of the haiku even rhyme. I think that I’ll call my rhyming haiku Haiku Rhyme Chains.

I have a series on Twitter under the handle #loveyourenemies and I will release quick lessons around the various tweets as an info product later this year or early 2014.

Enjoy!

They give you focus.
They ignite your passion and
make you determined.

You will learn who you
really are. Adversity
alone will show you.

Colin Powell said,
“Get mad, get over it then
get going.” Wise words.

Do not let anger
consume you to the point of
becoming reckless.

Do not waddle in
the cesspool of self pity.
It yields no results.

When one is prepared
a counter-strike will be an
unpleasant surprise.

You were not supposed
to be able to respond.
They thought you beaten.

Little did they know
how thick and impregnable
your castle’s walls are.

How deep your moat
and accurate your archers.
The oil pours so hot.

They thought you to be
alone, but you have allies
and wise advisors.

What foes may do to
you – or attempt to do, may
indeed be heinous.

However, do not
hate them. Hate blinds you. It makes
you brash and reckless.

Be thankful for what
they teach you. For how they push
you to new limits.

JFK said, “Fix your
roof when the sun is shining.”
Not when its raining.

Use times of calm to
fortify your defenses.
Prepare for battle.

Be not the one to
be called an aggressor, but
one who defends well.

That way, perhaps your
reputation will serve as
a deterring force.

To sum this all up
take the time to remember
this haiku chain rhyme:

#####

To your rivals you
owe a debt. Pay them back by
not getting upset.

Work to get even
instead. Psychological
warfare hurts their heads.

Their greed and lowly
scruples give them gall to run
into a brick wall.

That wall is one of
your castle’s walls. Now you have
them by their damned balls.

You don’t have to turn
the other cheek. Not when its
justice that you seek.

Do all you can to
keep the peace. However, do
not let good sense cease.

Be patient and let
things take their course then ride-off
on your swift white horse.

It is a sweet thing
to give them a kiss and watch
their pants soil with piss.

Kind of like how Mike
told Fredo, “I know it was
you.” Smell the doo-doo?

Be well-schooled in the
compiled teachings of Robert
Greene. Know what I mean?

Read The 48
Laws of Power
so over
foes you will tower.

Learn from the book The
33 Strategies of
War
to tilt the score.

“What would Jesus do?”
Well, look what they did to him
so they will screw you.

Kill them with kindness.
The unjust will think you dumb,
blind and mindless.

Feigning weakness is
a smart way to cope. Ali
called it “Rope-a-Dope.”

Learn who is who. Friend,
foe, or frenemy. Just please
love your enemies.

The Choice Is Your Own

6 Jul

This poem is a series of 15 haiku poems that are strung together in a series to tell a story. I call this style that I created a haiku chain poem. According to Dictionary.com, a haiku is a major form of Japanese verse, written in 17 syllables divided into 3 lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables, and employing highly evocative allusions and comparisons, often on the subject of nature or one of the seasons; or a poem written in this form.

This poem talks about some of the holy texts, gods, and tenets for one of world’s major religions, Hinduism.

Our oldest scripture
is called the Rigveda. There
are three other texts.

The Yajurveda,
the Samaveda, and the
Atharvaveda.

Total freedom of
belief and worship is how
we practice our faith.

Monotheism?
Polytheism? Either
is tolerated.

Dharma is order,
law, harmony and all truth.
It comes from Brahman.

Brahman is supreme.
There are others like Vishnu,
Shiva and Shakti.

Sometimes the gods may
personify as humans.
They are avatars.

We define Karma
as the moral law of cause
and effect. Deeds. Thoughts.

The cycle: action;
reaction; birth; death; rebirth —
is called samsara.

Samsara provides
pleasure that encourages
reincarnation.

Know that Nirvana
is the ultimate goal of
life. Stop the cycle.

Kama means to wish,
passion, longing and pleasure
of enjoying life.

The enjoyment of
love, affection, sensual
things that may please you.

Love and devotion.
Right action. Meditation.
Wisdom. All yogas.

Yoga means a path.
You choose your path for your life.
The choice is your own.
